Sengliang remarks: The Vātsīputrīya questioned the Buddha using his own views, merely wishing to see how they agreed or differed. The views of non-Buddhists differ: some say there is no retribution for good and evil; some say there is good and evil but no Path; some say there is a Path but it is attained without cultivation; some say men attain it but women do not; some say renunciants attain it but householders do not; some say those who abandon desire attain it but those with desire do not—these are the two questions. Baoliang remarks: He too had no fixed attachment. The reason the Buddha remained silent was to reveal his own traces, not that he intended to set aside answering."
