Daosheng comments: The pure and refined part becomes butter; the remaining liquid is buttermilk. When the two vehicles accomplish the Way, their bodies are what remain. If one does not understand permanence, one deviates far from this; this is the second misguided grasping. Sengliang comments: Advancing toward the fruit is compared to buttermilk; attaining the fruit is compared to butter. Lacking the two wisdoms, both attaining and advancing fail to be accomplished. Fayao says: Since they do not know the churning of understanding and explaining, worldly goodness is still difficult to obtain, how much more so the fruits of the two vehicles! Tanji says: The seven preparatory upāyas among those advancing toward the śrāvaka [fruits] are compared to buttermilk. Sengzong says: From the first stage to the seventh stage is like fresh butter; from the eighth stage to the tenth stage is like clarified butter; buttermilk is not within the limit of the five flavors. Now it clarifies that since they do not know how to churn and seek superior, transcendent goodness, even the defiled goodness of ordinary people prior to the stages is unobtainable, how much less could the fresh butter of the true flavor of the higher stages be obtained? Baoliang says: The five faculties headed by faith are also not established.
