Sengliang comments: The third parable. Knowing the general drift of the sūtra, they gradually advance by means of humans and gods, ultimately aiming to become Buddhas. 'By what means can it be obtained?' means knowing themselves to lack understanding and upāya. Sengzong says: Although they obtain the name of permanence, they do not understand the reality of proceeding toward permanence.
