In the fifth [part], which explains Māra's intention in speaking the dhāraṇī, it first distinguishes [the particulars] and then concludes. Within the particulars there are four phrases: the first two are for the sake of persons, and the latter two are for the sake of the Dharma. Regarding [the clauses] for the sake of persons, the initial statement, 'in order to subdue the non-Buddhists,' manifests the purpose of his utterance with respect to the preachers and those who do not sever the Dharma mentioned earlier: it is to enable these persons to propagate the correct Dharma and subdue the non-Buddhists that he speaks the dhāraṇī to guard and protect them. 'To protect their own bodies' manifests the purpose of his utterance with respect to those who have lost their minds and those who are fearful mentioned earlier: it is to enable those people to obtain this divine dhāraṇī, guard and protect their own bodies, and uphold the scriptural teachings that he speaks the dhāraṇī. Regarding [the clauses] for the sake of the Dharma, 'protecting the correct Dharma' means protecting the Hīnayāna teachings; Māra's intention being to protect the Hīnayāna teachings, he speaks the dhāraṇī to protect those who do not sever the Dharma mentioned earlier. 'Protecting the Mahāyāna' means that Māra's intention being to protect the Mahāyāna teachings, he speaks the dhāraṇī to protect those who preach the great Dharma mentioned earlier. 'Spoke such a dhāraṇī' concludes it comprehensively.
