Second, from "At that time the great assembly heard the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, universally for the sake of..." onward, relying on Cunda requesting [the Buddha] to remain, it clarifies that the Buddha responsively becomes extinct, but in reality does not transmigrate, and being unconditioned is therefore eternal. In the former part, initially relying on Cunda's request, the eternal Dharma is briefly opened; second, Cunda addresses the Buddha that the two givings are without distinction; from "Not so" onward, relying on Cunda posing a difficulty, the eternal meaning is extensively explained. In the first section, there is first the request, and afterward the answer. In the request, it first identifies and lists the person making the request. "At that time in the assembly" shows his location. "There was an upāsaka" identifies and distinguishes the person. This is actually a great sage manifesting his residence, whose guidance cannot be equaled by beginners. "Of this city of Kuśīnagara" indicates his dwelling place. "A son of an artisan" reveals his caste. "Named Cunda" discerns his name. "Together with fifteen companions of his kind" also lists his assembly.
