問曰：此等是上所列優婆塞不？釋言：非是，云何知非？前從遠來，此是舊眾。又復向前優婆塞等已辦食具，獻佛不受；今此純陀未有施設，下蒙佛許，方始備辦，故知不同。若非前眾，向前序中何故不列拘尸舊眾？不列者多，何獨責此？

Question: Are these people the upāsakas listed above or not? Explanation: They are not. How is it known that they are not? The former came from afar; these are of the local assembly. Furthermore, the previous upāsakas had already prepared food utensils, and upon offering them to the Buddha, he did not accept them; whereas this Cunda had not yet made preparations, and only after receiving the Buddha's permission below did he begin to prepare them. Therefore we know they are not the same. If they are not the former assembly, why were the local assembly of Kuśīnagara not listed in the previous preface? There are many who were not listed; why reprove only this?
