Within the two verses below, the first verse recounts "if you do not entreat him, our lives will not be intact" in the fourth verse above; these sentient beings weep until their faces are swollen, explaining their present grief and suffering and that their physical lives are not intact. "All drifted away by the bitter waters of birth and death" explains their sinking into birth and death, and that their life of wisdom is not intact. The latter verse recounts "therefore you should go to entreat the Tamer on our behalf" above. "For this reason" means because the multitude weeps and is drifted away by birth and death. "Should foster constant faith" means, in response to the preceding weeping, entreating the Buddha to abide. The assembly thinks the Buddha will be extinguished, which is why they weep; the Buddha should abide long to foster their constant faith. "In order to sever birth and death" means, in response to being drifted away by the bitter waters of birth and death earlier, entreating the Buddha to sever it. "Abiding long in the world" summarizes and concludes the entreaty.
