Within the next three verses, "The Tathāgata residing among the Saṃgha" recounts "abiding long in the world, benefiting immeasurable multitudes" in the verse above, explaining the benefit of his bodily abiding, the Saṃgha being equivalent to the immeasurable multitudes spoken of earlier. "Expounding the unsurpassed Dharma" recounts "expounding the unsurpassed ambrosia praised by wisdom" in the preceding verse, explaining the benefit of his vocal abiding. "Like Mount Sumeru resting securely in the great ocean" illuminates the aforesaid benefit of the Tathāgata residing among the Saṃgha; Sumeru is formed of jewels, reflecting and brightening the great ocean; the Buddha is formed of all virtues, illuminating and elevating the great assembly. From "The Buddha's wisdom can" downward, it illuminates the aforesaid benefit of expounding the unsurpassed Dharma: the Buddha's wisdom can sever our ignorance and eliminate the ground of ignorance, like cool clouds arising in the open sky, illuminating this by means of an analogy. The Buddha is like the open sky, and his teaching is like the arising of clouds; because ignorance is severed, the four entrenchments do not arise, just like the sun rising, dispelling the clouds and shining light, illuminating this by means of an analogy. Severing and eliminating the four entrenchments is due to extinguishing ignorance; hence it is like the sun rising, dispelling the clouds and shining light; these are the root and branches mutually illuminating each other.
