自下第二比丘哀請，佛為宣說。於此分中，義二文四。言義二者，一明如來三事涅槃；二「時諸比丘聞佛世尊定涅槃」下，明四法實義。言文四者，一諸比丘等哀請為由；二「佛告比丘莫如凡夫諸天人」下，如來為說三事涅槃；三「諸比丘聞佛世尊定涅槃」下，比丘重復哀請為由；四「佛告比丘諦聽」已下，如來為說四法實義。

From here below is the second part: the bhikṣus sorrowfully entreat, and the Buddha preaches for their sake. Within this portion, there are two meanings and four textual units. As for the two meanings: first, explaining the Tathāgata's three-matter nirvāṇa; second, from 'Then the bhikṣus, hearing that the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, was definitely entering nirvāṇa' onward, explaining the true meaning of the four dharmas. As for the four textual units: first, the sorrowful entreaty of the bhikṣus and others serves as the cause; second, from 'The Buddha told the bhikṣus: Do not, like ordinary persons and the gods' onward, the Tathāgata explains for their sake the three-matter nirvāṇa; third, from 'The bhikṣus, hearing that the Buddha, the World-Honoured One, was definitely entering nirvāṇa' onward, the bhikṣus' repeated sorrowful entreaty serves as the cause; fourth, from 'The Buddha told the bhikṣus: Listen attentively' onward, the Tathāgata explains for their sake the true meaning of the four dharmas.
