In the former part, it first says “We, from this day forth,” clarifying the time when they would have no savior. Formerly they had a teacher, but the loss of his shelter would come afterward; hence it says “from this day forth.” “Have no savior or protector”: there is nowhere to leave evil behind; there is no savior for present evil, and no protector for future evil. “Have nowhere to look up to and revere”: there is nowhere to gather goodness. Saying “impoverished” reveals the loss of having nowhere to revere, meaning they lack the wealth of Dharma. Saying “destitute and exposed” shows the failure of having no savior: having no one to save and protect them, they are therefore destitute and exposed. In the latter part, first saying “Once we are far removed” speaks from the initial separation. If they have doubts, the Buddha resolves them; subsequent doubts would remain unresolved, hence it says, “If there are any, whom should we ask again?” to eliminate their doubts.
