In the second section, it clarifies that to protect those who receive the Dharma, he speaks the spell as a safeguard. People are either genuine or false: those who act for the Way and for others are called genuine; those who act for the body and for wealth are said to be false. Fully analyzed, the text should have three parts: first, citing the genuine; second, analyzing the false; third, from "whether genuine or false" downward, repeating both the genuine and the false. In showing that he speaks [the spell] for them, the text only has two, omitting the citation of the genuine. Since he still acts for the false, the genuine goes without saying; hence it is omitted. Among the false there are five kinds: "for the sake of offerings" means receiving and upholding the sūtra teachings in order to obtain the four requisites of clothing, food, bedding, and medicine; "for the sake of fear" means fearing present sufferings and future evil destinies; "for the sake of deceiving others" means deceiving others to make them revere oneself; "for the sake of wealth and profit" means in order to gain gold, silver, storehouses, and so forth; "for the sake of conforming to others" means being pressured by others without having sincere intention oneself. It is for these five matters that they receive this Great Vehicle, and therefore they are called false. Broadly speaking, receiving any sūtra teachings under these conditions is false. Here, in reference to this sūtra, it temporarily speaks of receiving the Great [Vehicle]. The false are indeed immeasurable, but these five are temporarily cited. Among the five, fear is entirely for the sake of the body; offerings and wealth are entirely for the sake of wealth; deceiving others and conforming to others are for both body and wealth. Below, it repeats those for whom it is done: "or genuine" repeats the genuine that was previously omitted; "or false" repeats the false analyzed above. "I speak the spell to dispel fear for these people" generally explains speaking it for them. The beneficial matters are not one, but the power of dispelling fear is potent, which is why it is singled out.
