From this point onward is the second [part], admonishing and exhorting them to abandon attachment. Therein are two [parts]: first, raising faith and slander to admonish and exhort them to abandon attachment; second, from "buddha-nature is not called a single dharma" downward, clarifying that the nature is solely the Buddha speaking according to his own intent, to admonish and exhort them to abandon attachment. In the first part, he first broadly reveals the characteristics of slander to cause people to abandon and keep distant from them; from "if one says that an icchantika has not yet generated good..." downward, he raises slander to reveal faith to cause people to practice and learn. In the previous clarification of slander, there are three distinct sections in the text: first, revealing the characteristics of slander with reference to the gains and losses in the practice and cultivation of the seven kinds of persons; second, revealing the characteristics of slander with reference to the inclusive and restricted meanings of the seven kinds of persons; third, clarifying the reasons why slander arises concerning the previous two. Within the first section, there are three distinct statements: first, clarifying the loss of the seven kinds of persons not cultivating. "Not cultivating the body," etc., directly enables one to commit the five heinous transgressions and other sins, constantly sinking into the three wretched realms; hence it is called "loss." Second, clarifying the gain of the seven kinds of persons practicing and cultivating. "Approaching spiritual friends, hearing the Dharma, contemplating, practicing, and learning, and reaching the other shore"; hence it is called "gain." Third, revealing slander with reference to this. Precisely because the seven kinds of persons not cultivating the body and so forth constantly sink, saying that an icchantika definitely attains bodhi is called "tainted attachment." Furthermore, because the seven kinds of persons approach spiritual friends, hear the Dharma, contemplate, practice, and reach the other shore, claiming that an icchantika absolutely cannot attain supreme bodhi is called "deluded."
