〈名字功德品〉者，此經名中說大涅槃功德之法，攝旨從詮，是故說為名字功德。廣辯此義，故云〈名字功德品〉也。此品答上「云何於經究竟到岸」，辯經名德，令人奉持，窮經旨趣，名到經岸，此乃明其安樂之因。持經名德，近離惡道，終得究竟常樂之果，名得安樂。

As for the chapter “Merit of the Name,” within the title of this sūtra, the dharma of the merit of the Great Nirvāṇa is spoken; gathering the purport from the verbal expression, it is therefore spoken of as the merit of the name. Because it distinguishes this meaning at length, it is called the chapter “Merit of the Name.” This chapter answers the above [question], “How does one reach the ultimate shore regarding the sūtra?”, distinguishing the merits of the sūtra's name to lead people to uphold it, fathoming the sūtra's purport being called reaching the sūtra's shore; this clarifies the cause of peace and bliss. Upholding the merits of the sūtra's name, one immediately departs from the evil destinies and ultimately attains the fruit of permanent bliss, which is called attaining peace and bliss.
