In the first, “’Great’ is called permanence”: relying on the name “Great,” he distinguishes its great virtue. This sūtra possesses six meanings explaining “great,” as distinguished above; here it is temporarily revealed through the meaning of permanence. From “like the eight rivers” downward, relying on the name “nirvāṇa,” he distinguishes the virtues of nirvāṇa, first through an analogy and then applying it. “This sūtra is like this in subduing all knots of affliction and all māra-natures”: breaking marks to proceed toward stillness, what this sūtra distinguishes is the same as the preceding eight rivers, hence it is said to be “like this.” Subduing afflictions means departing from the māra of afflictions and all māra-natures, and extinguishing the other three māras. “Then, one must cast off bodily life in the Mahāparinirvāṇa”: realizing the real and casting off marks; realizing the real eliminates delusion, so that no delusion remains, and thus it is called casting off. “It is named the Mahāparinirvāṇa” generally concludes it.
