In the third analogy of refuting heterodoxy and establishing the correct, it first dismisses the heterodox person; from "the visiting physician had the thought of wishing to instruct the king..." onward, it refutes his heterodox teaching. The former also has two parts: 1) expounding the correct Dharma for him; 2) from "At that time, the king..." onward, banishing the heterodox person. In the first part, initially saying "he immediately explained various medical methods and other arts to the king" is directly expounding the Dharma for him. Medical prescriptions are the methods for curing evil; arts are the methods for gathering good. Furthermore, medical prescriptions are the dharmas for self-cultivation; arts are the dharmas for transforming others. "Great King, you should know that you must distinguish skillfully" exhorts him to know gain and loss; since the present and past were confused with each other, he had to distinguish them. Praising them as superior to induce him to accept them, [he said] these dharmas are such that they can govern a state and can cure illness. The arts expounded can govern a state, and governing a state is transforming others; the medical methods expounded can cure illness, and curing illness is self-cultivation. Below, dismissing the heterodox person: "At that time, after the king of the state heard these words, only then did he know the former..." and so forth; knowing the former was inferior to the new, he therefore banished him. From "Thereafter..." onward, knowing the new was superior to the former, he therefore doubled his reverence.
