The above revokes falsehood; below he exhorts the cultivation of truth. There are four distinct clauses: (1) presenting his own past causes; (2) from "Now having attained..." downward, presenting his own present effect: the attained virtue of the fruit surpasses the two vehicles, hence it is called "unsurpassed"; attaining great nirvāṇa without abandoning the mundane realm, with unobstructed skill-in-means, hence it is called "expedient means"; (3) from "For your sakes..." downward, clarifying the purpose of cultivation in terms of his own past causes, wishing to cause sentient beings to bear the kindness and accept the practice—"relinquishing bodies, hands," and so forth refers to the previous austerities; (4) from "Therefore..." downward, concluding with an exhortation to cultivate in terms of his own present fruit: because for your sakes I sought and attained such an unsurpassed fruit, you should not be negligent, discarding it without learning it.
