In the second part, on the power of the Dharma assisting in the completion of practice, "How does one attain fearlessness in the assembly, like gold free of fault?" explains that the Dharma assists in the completion of the practice of extinguishing sin. Sinners who slander the Dharma, such as icchantikas, are termed the "great assembly"; how is it that within their midst one alone attains fearlessness, just as with gold in the world, whose faults of blemish or defilement none can speak of? Below, the answer states that through relying on the sūtra to repent and extinguish all sins, one causes all sinful karmas to reach the place of non-reaching; hence one attains fearlessness, like gold free of fault. "How does one dwell in turbidity without being defiled..." downward explains that the Dharma assists in the completion of the practice of extinguishing afflictions. "How does one dwell in turbidity without being defiled, like a lotus flower?" asks in terms of the person. There are five kinds of turbidity; here, only the turbidities of affliction and views are discussed. How can a bodhisattva who has recently generated the aspiration be made to dwell in these turbidities without being defiled, like a lotus flower? Below, the answer states that through the sūtra one comes to be undefiled. "How does one dwell in afflictions without being defiled by them, like a physician treating an illness without being defiled by it?" asks in terms of the Dharma. How could the Dharma of the sūtra have defilement or non-defilement? If it cannot cause people to extinguish and eliminate afflictions, this blemishes the efficacy of the sūtra, hence it is called "defilement," just as a worldly physician whose treatment does not cure illnesses blemishes his medical art. If it can cause people to extinguish and eliminate afflictions, this does not blemish the power of the sūtra, hence it is called "non-defilement," just as a worldly physician whose treatments all cure illnesses does not blemish his medical art. Therefore it is now asked: how does this sūtra dwell in afflictions without being defiled, like a physician remaining undefiled? Below, the answer states that this sūtra can extinguish all afflictions of sentient beings, just as a physician cures illnesses; hence it remains undefiled.
