Within the text there are two parts: first, clarifying that sentient beings have the tathāgata-nature which can be entered; second, from 'The vaipulya sūtras are like nectar' downward, instructing people to enter. The former is what is realized; the latter is that which can realize. Within the former there are again two parts: first, directly clarifying the existence of the nature; second, from 'Kāśyapa addressed the Buddha: Is there truly no self?' downward, questions and answers reaffirming it. Within the former part, it first clarifies that ordinary sentient beings have the nature but do not see it; from the simile of the infant downward, it clarifies that people of the two vehicles have the nature but do not see it. In the former part, it first asks: Is there a self in the twenty-five states of existence, or not? From what does this question arise? The Tathāgata had just said that although the world speaks of a self, there is no buddha-nature; Kāśyapa knew it exists, and therefore asked. Below, the Buddha answers; the meaning of buddha-nature is as explained in a separate chapter. In the text, there is first the dharma, next the simile, and then the application.
