In the dharma, there are three clauses: First, the words 'The self is just the tathāgatagarbha' directly point to the substance of the self. If one spoke straightforwardly of the self, one feared that people would grasp it with ordinary sentiments; for this reason, it is explained in terms of the garbha. 'Tathāgatagarbha' is another name for buddha-nature; discussing its substance, it is the true conscious mind. Within this mind, the dharmas of the Buddha as numerous as the sands of the Ganges in the dharmadhātu are contained, and hence it is called a storehouse (garbha). Furthermore, because it is concealed by immeasurable afflictions, it is also called a storehouse; the Tathāgata's dharmakāya being stored within this storehouse is called the tathāgatagarbha. Moreover, from this storehouse the Tathāgata is born, and for this reason it is also called the tathāgatagarbha.
