Within the simile there are three parts: first, the simile of ordinary beings possessing the nature but not seeing it due to the obstruction of delusions; second, from 'There was a different person' downward, the simile of the Buddha first expounding it for them, but they, upon hearing it, do not see it; third, from 'Immediately in her house dug out' downward, the simile of finally revealing it to them, and they, upon hearing it, awaken and understand. In the first part, the 'poor woman' is a simile for ordinary beings; having no virtues, she is called poor, but being able to give birth to true understanding, she is called a woman. The five aggregates are the house, and right within the aggregates there is the nature; hence it says, 'Inside the house there was much gold stored.' One's own mind-consciousness is called 'family members.' The mind has differences of coarse and subtle, sharp and dull, which are described as 'great and small.' Not being aware that one's own body possesses the tathāgata-nature is called 'unknowing.' Alternatively, the sentient beings of the twenty-five states of existence are called family members, people having superior and inferior qualities are called great and small, and failing to understand the nature is called unknowing.
