In the second section, the text has three pairs: first, the simile of the Buddha encouraging cultivation and her demanding to see the nature; second, the simile of the Tathāgata promising to show it and her, upon hearing it, not believing; third, the simile of the Buddha proclaiming his own ability and her, upon hearing it, seeking to see it. In the first pair, 'There was a different person' and so forth is a simile for the Buddha encouraging cultivation; the Buddha surpassing the common crowd is called a different person. Being skilled in understanding the methods of practice that reveal the nature is called 'knowing the expedient means.' Informing her with the Dharma is called 'told the woman.' Encouraging her to sever obstructions and let goodness benefit her is called 'hired to weed.' Below is her demand to see the nature; the woman then replied, 'I cannot.' Conversely demanding to see the nature reveals the capacity for the sage's mind, which in meaning is called a reply. If there is nothing to be realized, she is unwilling to cultivate and sever, which is called 'I cannot.' From 'If you can show' downward accords with demanding to see the nature: the future understanding mind, produced through the manifestation of cultivation, is called 'my son.' If the Buddha reveals the nature, I should now seek the understanding mind to realize and see it; hence she says, 'If you show my son the gold store.' Diligently cultivating for the sake of the nature is called 'do it quickly.' In the second pair, 'I know the expedient means and can show your son' is the Tathāgata promising to show it. From 'The woman replied' downward is her hearing it and not believing; 'my family, great and small' is explained as before. The nature is in my own body and even I do not know it, so how could the Buddha, a different person, know my nature and show my son? In the third pair, 'That person again said, "I truly can"' is the Buddha thereby revealing his own ability to know and show it. From 'The woman replied' downward is her hearing it and seeking to see it; she does not merely seek realization and seeing in the future, but also seeks understanding and seeing in accordance with the words in the present; therefore she says, 'I also wish to see it, and you may show it to me as well.'
