In the second, specific [instruction], Kāśyapa first requests: 'How should I recognize such a person?' asks about the person to whom offerings are made; 'How should I make offerings?' asks about the ritual for making offerings. Below, the Buddha first instructs briefly in prose and then instructs extensively in verse. In the brief [prose], 'If there is a person who establishes the Dharma, one should inquire of them' answers his first question; 'One should sacrifice one's body,' etc., answers his second question. In the extensive [verse], 'As I have said in this sūtra' generally indicates the place of teaching. Below, he reveals the characteristics of the teaching. The first verse and a half teaches reverence and awe; the second verse and a half teaches esteem and love. In the former, the first half explains the person to whom offerings are made, answering the first question above; the following one verse explains the ritual for making offerings, answering the second question above, first in doctrine and then in simile. In the latter verse and a half, the first half again explains the person to whom offerings are made, answering the first question above; the following verse again explains the ritual of making offerings, answering the second question above, first in doctrine and then in simile.
