From here down is the fourth section, which broadly explains the characteristics of the demarcation of generating the resolve based on the second segment above, excluding icchantikas. The metaphors are ten in particular, but taken together they are eight: the seventh and eighth together reveal one meaning; the ninth and tenth together reveal one meaning; the rest are each one, and therefore they are called eight. Among the eight, the first four directly explain the characteristics of causing people to generate the resolve, excluding icchantikas; the latter four metaphors reinforce the previous four. Within the first four: the first explains that icchantika persons altogether have no mind to receive the Dharma, and therefore this sūtra cannot cause them to generate it, first giving the metaphor and then the application; the second demonstrates that their wholesome roots are difficult to bring forth, first giving the metaphor and then the application; the third explains that their evil minds are difficult to purify, first giving the metaphor and then the application; the fourth explains that their obstacle of transgressions is difficult to cure, wherein it first explains that it can benefit wholesome people, and afterward explains that it cannot benefit icchantikas.
