In the third pair, the former "furthermore" clarifies that the teaching assists the principle, like an incantation incanting medicine; the latter "furthermore" clarifies that the principle assists the teaching, like medicine smeared on a drum. In the former, there is first the metaphor: "skilled physician" illustrates this Mahāparinirvāṇa Sūtra; "physician's son" illustrates the Buddha, for the Buddha's virtues are born from the scriptural Dharma, hence called the physician's son. In this scripture, explaining meanings profoundly is called "knowing the deep and profound"; fully possessing curative methods is called "knowing the unsurpassed incantation that eliminates poison". "If a virulent poison..." and so forth brings out what is treated: "snake" illustrates the four grave sins; "dragon" illustrates the five unpardonable offenses; "viper" illustrates slandering the Dharma. Below clarifies the curative ability: the Dharma of the teaching is like an incantation; the teaching revealing curative methods is called "incanting the medicine to make it potent"; using the Dharma to assist people is called "smearing the leather sandals"; the mind that obtains the Dharma being able to extinguish all sins is called "touching venomous insects, the poison is neutralized thereby". According with the application, the text here is slightly deficient; if complete, it should say that through the power of the incanted medicine the body attains ease. "Excepting only one poison" marks the demarcation. Next comes the application: "Nirvāṇa is likewise" applies to the aforementioned skilled physician; the skilled physician's son is omitted and not applied; knowing the deep and profound up to the unsurpassed incantation that eliminates poison are also omitted and not applied. "If there are sentient beings who transgress the four grave sins" and so forth applies to the virulent poisonous snake, dragon, or viper; "all are able to be eliminated" applies to using the incantation to incant the medicine to make it potent, touching venomous insects, the poison being neutralized thereby. From "Like the medicine..." downward glosses it. From "not yet having generated the mind" downward applies to the aforementioned missing "the body attains ease"; from "excepting only one..." downward applies to excepting one dragon.
