合中還四：合初段中，先別、後總。別中，初言「我涅槃後，諸惡比丘抄略是經，分作多分」合初加水，如彼六卷《小泥洹》是。「是人雖讀，滅除要義，安置一世間莊嚴之語」合第二加水；「抄前著後、後著前」等合第三加水，先合後呵；「受畜不淨言佛聽許」合第四加水。

In the application [of the analogy], there are also four parts: In the application of the first section, it is first specific and then general. In the specific part, first saying, "After my nirvāṇa, evil monks will abridge this sūtra and divide it into many portions" applies to the first addition of water, such as the six-fascicle *Lesser Nirvāṇa Sūtra*. "Although these people read it, they eradicate the essential meaning and insert worldly decorative phrases" applies to the second addition of water. "Putting the front to the back and the back to the front," and so forth, applies to the third addition of water, first applying [the analogy] and then rebuking them. "Receiving and keeping impure things, claiming the Buddha permitted it" applies to the fourth addition of water.
