Although there are two meanings in each of these three lines, according to the application below, the first meaning should be the correct one, because below it speaks of the doubts of śrāvakas and ordinary persons. Below, the application reveals the dharma: "Śrāvakas, pratyekabuddhas, and bodhisattvas are also like this" applies to the "having many cows, of various colors" in the first line. The second single line is omitted and not applied. From "of the same single nature" below applies to the third line, within which it first applies to seeing that the milk is of one color, "the same single buddha-nature" directly matching the preceding analogy; from "just as" below it matches the text; from "the reason why" below it explains. From "yet sentient beings say that the Buddha..." below applies to being immediately astonished, etc.; "yet sentient beings say that buddhas, bodhisattvas, śrāvakas, and pratyekabuddhas have differences" applies to immediately being astonished that the cows' natures and colors are each different; "there are śrāvakas and ordinary persons who doubt regarding the three vehicles, wondering how they could have no difference" applies to how the milk could all be of the same single color. From "these sentient beings, after a long time, understand" below applies to the fourth line, first applying and then matching the text.
