第三番中，迦葉初先舉凡對聖難佛所說，「如佛向說凡性不如聲聞性勝，凡性既劣，如來何故說拘尸城歡喜旃陀賢劫作佛？聲聞性勝，如來何故不記舍利及目連等速成佛道？」下佛答之。答意如何？彰彼歡喜雖為旃陀，實是菩薩。佛於諸聖隨願遲速與記不同，歡喜旃陀以發速願故與速記，非記凡夫，不得為難。

In the third round, Kāśyapa first brings up ordinary beings in contrast to noble ones to object to what the Buddha said: "As the Buddha stated earlier, the nature of ordinary beings is inferior while the nature of śrāvakas is superior. Since the nature of ordinary beings is inferior, why did the Tathāgata say that the joyful caṇḍāla of the city of Kuśī[nagara] would become a buddha in the Bhadrakalpa? Since the nature of śrāvakas is superior, why did the Tathāgata not prophesy that Śāriputra, Maudgalyāyana, and others would quickly attain the buddha path?" Below, the Buddha answers him. What is the intention of the answer? It reveals that although that joyful one was a caṇḍāla, he was in truth a bodhisattva. The Buddha confers prophecies differently according to the slowness or quickness of the noble ones' vows: because the joyful caṇḍāla made a vow for quickness, he was given a quick prophecy; this was not prophesying an ordinary being, so it cannot be made into an objection.
