Third, from "Why" onward, he extensively reveals that the previous verse did not mean "all." The words "Why is that?" challenge what came before to introduce what follows: for what reason do I say it does not apply to all? Below, he reveals it by contrast. First, he clarifies that in the verse, "it is not that all living beings depend on food to survive." There are three distinct phrases: First, he broadly clarifies that the Tathāgata and the noble disciples all do not eat. Question: How is it that arhats and pratyekabuddhas do not eat? Explanation: Their present retribution bodies are the karmic fruits of ordinary persons' fragmented [birth and death] and still require the sustenance of food; after crossing beyond this body, the retribution of transformation that they will receive in the future will no longer require food. Furthermore, arhats include both the actual and the transformed: the actual require food, while the transformed do not; therefore, the text below states: "My disciples are inconceivable; therefore they do not require food." Second, from "If it is said" onward, he specifically clarifies that the Tathāgata's body has no emaciation, having attained a vajra body, and therefore consumes nothing. Third, from "My disciples" onward, he specifically clarifies that the disciples are inconceivable and therefore do not require food. Next, he clarifies that "it is not that all who possess great power have minds free from jealousy": first he quotes the verse text to clarify that it is non-exhaustive, and from "Like worldly people" onward, he reveals this by the reverse: a person free from jealousy may well lack power, and how could a person of great power be hindered from having jealousy? Next, he clarifies that in the verse, "it is not that all, because of food, incur the suffering of sickness": first he quotes the verse text to clarify that it is non-exhaustive, and from "One also sees" onward, he reveals it through actual facts. Below, he clarifies that in the verse, "it is not that all pure practices result in receiving ease and joy": first he quotes the verse text to clarify that it is non-exhaustive, and from "In the world there are also" onward, he reveals it through actual facts. From "For this reason" onward, he brings it to a general conclusion that the previous verse is entirely non-exhaustive. This third part is now concluded.
