In the second request, the great assembly requests first. "At that time, all the devas..." and so forth marks and lists those making the request; "with different mouths and the same voice" reveals the manner of their request: because their requesting minds were identical, the words uttered were not different. Below, the wording of the request is listed: the first three and a half verses entreat the Buddha to remain; the final half verse requests the Buddha to preach the Dharma. Regarding the request to remain, the first verse adduces that the Three Jewels are difficult to conceive, showing that the Buddha's departure or staying is unobstructed, and requests him to remain. The subsequent two and a half verses adduce that those with conditions have not yet arrived, and request him to remain; the request to preach can be understood. In the Buddha's answer below, the first verse directly answers the previous request, clarifying that Kāśyapa and the others can sever the assembly's doubts, and there is no need for me to remain, nor need for me to preach. The subsequent one and a half verses dispel the doubts of the assembly: previously, the Buddha said, "Ānanda is diligent and vigorous and can sever the assembly's doubts," and the great assembly then thought, "Ānanda has not heard this sūtra all this while; how could he be able to sever all doubts?" and thus gave rise to sorrow and distress. The Buddha now dispels it: "Ānanda is learned and naturally understands the constant and the impermanent; he can sever the assembly's doubts, so there is no need for sorrow or distress."
