In the second passage, it first saves the hells, next saves the hungry ghosts, and finally saves animals. In saving the hells, the text has four distinct parts: first, emitting light to save the tormented sentient beings in the eight great hells. Second, uttering sounds to preach the tathāgatagarbha, saying that sentient beings possess the nature [of buddhahood], causing them to be reborn among humans and devas. Third, emitting light to save the tormented sentient beings in the subsidiary hells. Each of the aforementioned eight hells has its sixteen subsidiary hells, namely eight of cold ice and eight of blazing fire. Each of those hells has four sides, each with two of cold ice and two of blazing fire, thus making sixteen. However, here in the text it singles out the cold ice, without mentioning the eight blazing fires. Among the eight, the first four are named after their sounds, "apapa" and so forth being the sounds of cold; "utpala" and so forth are named after colors, the bodies of the sinners being frozen red, resembling an utpala, which is taken as their name; the rest are also like this. Meeting this light, all these are eliminated. Fourth, uttering sounds to preach the tathāgatagarbha, causing them to be reborn among humans and devas. Below, in saving the hungry ghosts and animals, in each case it first emits light and later utters sounds; because the tathāgatagarbha is the true substance of sentient beings, it is specifically spoken of. Hearing it, sentient beings therefore leave the three wretched realms and attain rebirth among humans and devas.
