In the first part: 'two people were close friends with each other' is an analogy for the spiritual capacity of the ordinary person and the bodhisattva according with each other, hence called 'close friends'. 'One was a prince, one was poor and base' distinguishes the two persons. The prince is the bodhisattva, who is born through transformation from the Buddha's kingly Dharma, hence called 'prince'; 'poor and base' is an analogy for the ordinary person, who is poor and lacks good wealth. 'Frequently visited back and forth' reveals their prior close friendship: the spiritual capacity of beings according with the sage is spoken of as 'going', and the sage responding is called 'returning'. The poor ordinary person hearing of the self from the sage is called 'seeing that the prince had a fine sword'. The true self is without defilement, so it is said to be 'pure'; the true self is free from marks, so it is also called 'wondrous'; being the finest and supreme within the principle, it is called 'foremost'; hearing it taught and having affection and delight for it is called 'his heart became covetous and attached'.
