In the second section, first the questions and answers distinguish the half and complete letters; from "What is meant by fully understanding letters?" downward, it explains the meaning of understanding the complete letters and the half letters. In the former, it first distinguishes the meaning of half and complete, and then explains the text. Generally speaking, there are three perspectives on the meaning of half and complete: First, distinguishing half and complete in terms of the graphic substance of the letters: that Siddhaṃ chart generates the roots of the letters and is called half; the remaining charts produced from it have complete letters and are called complete. Furthermore, all twelve charts are called half, while the remaining sūtras, treatises, records, and treatises are complete. Second, distinguishing half and complete in terms of what is expressed: expounding worldly dharmas is called half, while expounding supramundane dharmas is considered complete. Furthermore, within the supramundane, expounding the lesser is called half, and expounding the greater is called complete; this meaning is as explained earlier in the 'Section on the Four Characteristics'. Third, distinguishing half and complete in terms of what is generated: as the text below says, "Those generating afflictions are called half letters, and those generating goodness are called complete." Furthermore, within generating goodness, generating worldly goodness is called half, and generating supramundane goodness is called complete. Within the supramundane, generating Hīnayāna practices is called half, and generating Mahāyāna is called complete.
