Within the remedies of fearlessness, [the text] first explains the essence of the samādhis; from "when a bodhisattva enters these kings of samādhis, if they wish..." onward, it explains the functioning of the samādhis. Within the essence of the samādhis, the opening phrase, "A bodhisattva attains the twenty-five samādhis and destroys the twenty-five realms of existence," serves as a general heading. As stated in the Laṅkāvatāra [Sūtra], upon entering the first bhūmi one attains these samādhis and thereby destroys all realms of existence. Question: Samsāra is not yet exhausted at the first bhūmi; how can one destroy the twenty-five realms of existence? Answer: There are two kinds of samsāra: the first is fragmented [samsāra], and the second is transformational [samsāra]. Within fragmented [samsāra], there is the distinction between wholesome destinies and wretched destinies: the residual karmic energy of the wretched destinies is exhausted at the first bhūmi; within the wholesome destinies, there are coarse and subtle [forms], where the coarse are exhausted at the first bhūmi and the subtle extend up to the buddha-stage. At the first bhūmi one is free from the coarse, and thus it is said that one can destroy the twenty-five realms of existence. In fine detail, this is fully analyzed as in the chapter on the two kinds of samsāra. Next, they are extensively expounded and listed; below, the summary concludes in praise: "This is called attaining the twenty-five samādhis and severing the twenty-five realms of existence" is the general conclusion. "Such samādhis are called kings of samādhis" is the praise of their supremacy. Because they are supreme among samādhis, they are called kings; because they are kings, each and every one fully encompasses immeasurable hundreds of thousands of retinue [samādhis]. Within the functioning of the samādhis, the five clauses can be understood.
