問曰：《毘曇》說捨無量是無貪性，今云何言能斷貪、瞋？釋言：修捨有始、有終，始、終通論，貪、瞋俱治。據終偏於上親所成，於上親所捨離貪愛，故《毘曇》中說為無貪。

Question: The Abhidharma states that the immeasurable [mind] of equanimity has the nature of non-greed; why is it now said to be able to eliminate both greed and hatred? Answer: The cultivation of equanimity has a beginning and an end; considering beginning and end comprehensively, it treats both greed and hatred. In terms of the end, it is specifically accomplished toward close relatives, abandoning greed and affection toward close relatives; therefore it is spoken of in the Abhidharma as non-greed.
