5.347

前不共中，四無量心皆能出生，且論慈行；慈行實能生一切善，且說布施。「若不見貧，無緣生慈，若不生慈則不能施」，反明無慈不能行施。「以施因」下順明有慈故能行施。此言略少，若具，應言由見貧窮故生慈心，由生慈心故能行施，以施因緣令生得樂。

Regarding the unshared ones above, the four immeasurable minds can all generate them, but here it tentatively discusses the practice of benevolence; the practice of benevolence can truly generate all goods, but here it tentatively speaks of giving. "If one does not see poverty, there are no conditions to generate benevolence; if one does not generate benevolence, one cannot give": this inversely clarifies that without benevolence one cannot practice giving. From "by the causes and conditions of giving" onward, it directly clarifies that because there is benevolence, one can practice giving. These words are somewhat abbreviated; if stated fully, it should say that because one sees poverty, one generates the mind of benevolence; because one generates the mind of benevolence, one can practice giving; and by the causes and conditions of giving, one causes sentient beings to obtain joy.
