In the third section, because conceptual discrimination arises, his intention to give is halted; therefore it is said, 'Wait a moment, do not touch it.' From 'I now' onward directly demonstrates discrimination, within which there are three: First, discriminating the beggar by investigating where he comes from; hence it is said, 'From what direction did this arrow come?' Asking who sent him; hence it is said, 'Who shot it? Was it a kṣatriya, a brāhmaṇa,' etc.? Second, discriminating his practice. 'Is it bamboo? Is it willow?' discriminates his morality: morality has firm and soft, the firm being like bamboo and the soft being like willow. From 'Is its iron arrowhead' onward discriminates his wisdom: wisdom can destroy hindrances, and is therefore spoken of as the arrowhead. Wisdom arises based on teaching, and therefore it is asked, 'From what workshop was it produced?' Wisdom has firm and soft, and therefore it is further asked, 'Is it hard? Is it soft?' From 'Its feathers' onward discriminates his concentration: concentration can straighten the mind just as feathers straighten an arrow, and is therefore used as an analogy for it. Concentration must reside in a person, and persons have ordinary and noble; for this reason it is asked, 'What bird's feathers are these? A crow's? A vulture's?' Third, discriminating the beggar's words. Because those words of begging can give rise to the disease of stinginess, they are spoken of as poison. Words have the distinction of being composed by oneself or taught by another; therefore it is asked, 'Did it arise from deliberate contrivance? Or does it exist spontaneously?' Words have beautiful and ugly; therefore it is said, 'Is it human poison? Or snake poison?' This completes the third [section].
