From here below, in the second, allegorizing the despise of death, there are also four clauses: first, the parable of the characteristic of death manifesting before [him]; second, from "Having seen, he asked" downward, the parable of inquiring into the name of death; third, from "He asked, 'Why are you named Darkness?'" downward, the parable of inquiring into the function of death; fourth, from "The master asked" downward, the parable of the bodhisattva loathing death. In the first [clause], "outside the gate he further saw a woman": seeing the characteristic of death separately after the contemplation of birth is why it says "outside the gate"; being of the same class as birth, she is spoken of as a woman. The repulsive evil of the characteristic of death is called "her form was hideous"; the decay and cessation of pleasant matters is called "her clothes were tattered and ruined"; the various sufferings following closely behind are called "all kinds of dirt and grease"; the withered and emaciated appearance is called "her skin was wrinkled and chapped, and its color was pale white."
