Under the following section on presenting advantages to encourage cultivation, there are distinctly four clauses: First, it instructs the expounder to purify his body, in which it first presents ten purposes, and then encourages the purification of the body. Among these ten, the first nine are for fulfilling the practice of the Āgama teachings, while the last one is for realization. Among the first nine, the initial one is for receiving, and the latter eight are for expounding. Among the eight, the first five are for expounding the Mahāyāna, and the latter three are for expounding the small [vehicle]. In the Mahāyāna part, first saying 'one who expounds nirvāṇa' expounds the dharmas of the fruition of Buddhahood; 'one who expounds the buddha-nature' expounds the dharma of principle; 'one who expounds the secret treasury' is the expression of the preceding two; 'one who expounds the Mahāyāna' expounds the dharmas of practice; 'one who expounds the vaipulya' is the expression of the Mahāyāna. Below, in expounding the small, 'one who expounds the śrāvaka' refers to the conditioned practices of śrāvakas; 'one who expounds the pratyekabuddha' expounds the conditioned practices of pratyekabuddhas; 'one who expounds liberation' expounds the unconditioned nirvāṇa of the preceding two vehicles.
