In explaining 'tamer' (puruṣadamyasārathi), there is first a question and then an explanation. In the explanation, first stating 'being himself a hero' constitutes one gate, and 'further taming heroes' constitutes another gate. 'Truly neither a hero nor not a hero, yet because he tames heroes he is called a hero' clarifies the first gate above. From 'all men' onward, it clarifies the latter gate. Within this, it first clarifies the heroes to be transformed, and next clarifies the meaning of the Tathāgata being able to tame them. In the former, first stating 'whether a man or a woman, if endowed with four dharmas they are called a hero' marks it out comprehensively; from 'what are they' onward, it lists them; from 'fully endowed' onward, it concludes. From 'if there is a man without these four' onward, it raises the negative to reveal the positive. In clarifying that the Tathāgata is able to tame, first is the Dharma exposition, next a simile, and then the application. From 'a charioteer taming a horse has no fixed [method]' onward, it clarifies that the Buddha surpasses the worldly.
