In the second pair, King Ajātaśatru initially faints and falls upon hearing the admonition, and below, the Buddha sees him and shines touching light of loving-kindness upon him to receive and encourage him. In the former part, the king is initially terrified upon hearing it and looks up to ask who it is; King [Bimbisāra, his father] then answers and further warns and urges him; the king, hearing this afterwards, repents with shame and faints to the ground. There are three reasons why the king faints and falls: First, he fears that the Buddha's extinction is imminent and his own sin will go uncured; hence below, the Tathāgata sees Ajātaśatru fainting away and falling to the ground, and promises to remain in the world for his sake. Second, he fears that the torments of hell will soon arrive. Third, his shame toward his father is profound; therefore he faints and falls.
