In the explanation, the first sentence explains the name and reveals the transgression. Generally explained, "uninterrupted" (avīci) has four meanings: First, uninterrupted retribution of rebirth: when life is relinquished among humans, one immediately enters Avīci, with no intermediate abode in between. Second, uninterrupted physical form: the great citadel of Avīci is eighty thousand yojanas across; if one person enters it, their body fills it completely, and if all beings enter, their bodies are likewise so, with no empty space in between. Third, uninterrupted lifespan: once born therein, the lifespan lasts one kalpa, with no severance or interruption in between. Fourth, uninterrupted suffering: once born therein, suffering upon suffering continues in succession, with no interim of pleasure, hence it is called "uninterrupted". Here, it is provisionally explained according to the last meaning. Second, from "even if" onward distinguishes the physical characteristics, which is uninterrupted physical form. Third, from "cold hells" onward adduces the light to reveal the grave. Fourth, from "the four quarters" onward distinguishes its aspects of suffering. Fifth, from "committing a single [anantarya] transgression" onward distinguishes the cause and determines the retribution. According to the Abhidharma, depending on the number of offenses, each entails a distinct kalpa; what is spoken here is that they share a single kalpa, differing in gravity, which agrees with what is taught in the Āgama Sūtras.
