The analogies are extremely numerous, while the application text is very brief, making them difficult to align completely. Furthermore, the various analogies either draw upon a small part, a large part, or the entirety, and do not necessarily apply to every detail; hence they are difficult to align completely. Here we can only treat them roughly. Within the text there are five [analogies]: first, the analogy of the icchantika severing the good [roots]; second, from "The relatives of the family..." onward, the analogy of faint good moving the sage; third, from "Then the good physician reflected to himself..." onward, the analogy of the Buddha observing the capacities of beings; fourth, from "Having reflected thus, he immediately [set out] with the messenger..." onward, the analogy of seizing the opportunity to proceed with conversion; fifth, from "He addressed the caretaker: 'I am exceedingly busy...'" onward, the analogy of temporarily letting them go.
