In Jīvaka's urging, first he urges the king to focus his mind on seeking the Buddha, first giving six analogies, and below urging him to conform to them. From "Even to an icchantika the Tathāgata..." onward, he adduces the Buddha's preaching the Dharma for that icchantika to dispel the king's doubts and fears. Herein are three parts: first, he adduces the Tathāgata's preaching for an icchantika in order to reassure the king and make clear that it is fitting to go; second, the king hears this and asks with wonder: "I have heard that an icchantika does not have faith, does not hear, and does not observe to attain the meaning; why then does the Tathāgata preach the Dharma for him?" Saying that he has no faith means that he lacks the expedients of practice—below this explains the absence of practice; saying that he does not hear means that he lacks the wisdom of hearing; [saying that] he cannot observe means that he lacks the wisdom of reflection; [saying that] he does not attain the meaning and principle means that he lacks the wisdom of cultivation; third, Jīvaka explains at length, wherein he first gives an analogy, next applies it to clarify the Dharma, and afterward explains the reason why the Tathāgata preaches for him.
