Below, it explains them extensively. In explaining the first gate, it first questions and then explains. Within the explanation, it first brings forth the essence of the dharma that is heard; from "neither existent nor non-existent" downward, it broadly clarifies the meaning of "hearing what has not been heard" in terms of the dharma. Within the former, the initial phrase "meaning the profound secret treasury" provides a general heading, and below it reveals it individually: first citing buddha-nature, next clarifying the Three Jewels. "The Buddha and so forth are without distinction" clarifies that the three share the same essence. "The Three Jewels are eternal," etc., clarifies the three semantic approaches; this is bodhi. Below, it clarifies nirvāṇa: "the Buddhas ultimately do not enter nirvāṇa" means they do not enter the nirvāṇa of ashes, exhaustion, and destruction of the body. "Constant and unchanging" means abiding in the Great Nirvāṇa, without changing or altering.
