What preceded was an extensive explanation. From here down is the fourth [section], where things difficult to understand are re-clarified through question and answer, wherein it only clarifies the meaning of hearing and not hearing; because what was previously said—that not hearing contradicts hearing, and hearing contradicts not hearing—it must be explained again. The rest can be understood, so they are not discussed again. Regarding this text, with respect to persons there are three, with respect to revealing the meanings there are also three, and in terms of textual divisions there are four. The three with respect to persons are: first, addressing Virtuous King; second, addressing Ruri; third, addressing Fearless. The three with respect to revealing the meanings are: first, correctly distinguishing the meaning of hearing and not hearing; second, clarifying birth and non-birth for the sake of transforming and benefiting newly arrived bodhisattvas; third, distinguishing and clarifying the meaning of rebirth in the pure land to inspire sentient beings of this land to be reborn in the pure land. The four textual divisions are: first, Virtuous King is praised by the Tathāgata for what he has heard; second, Ruri questions and the Tathāgata distinguishes and explains; third, Fearless requests and the Tathāgata speaks for him; fourth, the prose following the verses, occasioned by Fearless's request, answers from afar the initial question of Virtuous King.
