Second, in the bodhisattva's cultivation of the path to sever them, the text specifically has three parts: 1. clarifying guarding the faculties; 2. from "having mindfulness and wisdom, he therefore does not see a self" downward, clarifying his departure from dust; 3. from "The bodhisattva at that time has the five faculties purified" downward, concluding generally and revealing the benefits. In the first part there are four: 1. properly guarding the faculties; 2. from "fearing" downward clarifies the purpose of guarding the faculties: out of fear of afflictions and in order to attain all wholesome [qualities]; 3. from "if one can" downward clarifies the appropriateness of guarding: if one can guard the faculties, one can then collect the mind, and if one can collect the mind, one can then guard the faculties—in which first is the dharma, next the simile, and later the application; 4. from "if one attains hearing" downward, cultivation to guard the faculties: first cultivating mindfulness and wisdom as the method for guarding the faculties—hearing the sūtras and attaining wisdom is the cultivation of wisdom; "then attains single-minded recollection" is the cultivation of mindfulness. Below, it clarifies guarding the faculties: first the dharma, next the simile, and the application below can be understood.
