The above resolved his objection with respect to the good; next it does so with respect to the evil. It first cites [the objection] and directly refutes it. The passage from "Why is this?" onward explains it, within which there are three clauses: First, "It is not evil sounds, but rather an evil mind" is a brief explanation in response to the question. Second, the passage from "What is this?" onward discloses it further: although one hears an evil sound, an evil mind does not arise; therefore one should know it is not caused by evil sounds—this explains the earlier statement that it does not arrive through evil sounds; and the passage from "yet sentient beings, due to defilements..." onward explains the earlier statement that the effect is indeed an evil mind. Third, the passage from "If sounds were determinate" onward refutes their definition of determinacy: if sounds were determinate, all who hear them should give rise to evil; examining the mind through sound, it either arises or does not arise, so one should know that it is indeterminate—refuting sound by means of mind; and the passage from "Because it is indeterminate" onward reveals sound with reference to mind.
