上來解釋此德之中無定、無果，自下釋上聞《涅槃經》得菩提義，先牒難詞噵其不解，次勅許說，下正為釋，謂聞是經不作字相、不作句相，乃至不取一切法相方得菩提，非取相得。

The above explained that within this virtue there is neither determinacy nor effect; next below, it explains the meaning stated above of attaining bodhi upon hearing the Nirvāṇa Sūtra. It first cites the words of the objection, declaring his lack of understanding; next it grants permission to speak; below it directly explains for him, meaning that upon hearing this sūtra, only when one does not form marks of characters, does not form marks of sentences, and ultimately does not grasp at the marks of any dharmas does one attain bodhi; it is not attained by grasping at marks.
