Regarding the third virtue, there are first a question, next an explanation, and then an overall conclusion. In the explanation, it proclaims the immeasurable mind of benevolence to be the essence of the virtue; all four immeasurable minds are this virtue, and [the text] merely raises the first one. Furthermore, practices have an analytical aspect and an inclusive aspect: if based on differentiation, the four practices are each distinct; if based on inclusion, one is raised as the head and the remainder all enter into it. Here, relying on inclusion, it therefore raises benevolence alone to comprehensively gather the remaining three. In the text, the initial statement, "abandoning benevolence, one attains benevolence; attaining benevolence does not come from conditions," briefly marks it out: it means abandoning all benevolence of grasping conditions and attaining that equal great benevolence without conditions. This unconditional benevolence is accomplished by witnessing the real; looking back based on the real, it has always been without conditions—how could one know from where it arises? Therefore it says that when attained, it does not come from causes and conditions.
