Regarding the fourth virtue, there are first a question to initiate it, next an explanation, and then a conclusion. For points difficult to understand, question and answer re-clarify them. In the explanation, it proclaims ten matters as its essence: first it raises their number, and next lists their names. "Roots deep and difficult to uproot" explains being able to establish the beginning: the non-lax mind can serve as the root of buddhahood, hence it is called a root; being together with the true mark, increasing and indestructible, it is called deep and difficult to uproot. Second, "giving rise to the thought of certainty regarding one's own body" reveals being able to proceed to the end: mindfully considering that one's own body will definitely attain bodhi is called giving rise to the thought of certainty. The eight below are the complete practices: the first five subsume merit, and the latter three subsume wisdom. Among merit, the first two are practices of purifying the land: "not observing the field of merit and the non-field of merit" cultivates giving to purify the land; when the mind has discrimination, the land attained is impure, so not observing the field and the non-field and giving with an impartial mind can purify the buddha-land. "Cultivating the pure land" is cultivating morality to purify the land, because by cultivating morality one attains an adorned and pure land. The latter three are its practices of giving rise to the dharmakāya: "extinguishing the residual and cutting off the conditions of karma" is the practice of leaving the defiled body; cutting off and ending residual suffering is called extinguishing the residual; severing and leaving residual origin is called eliminating the conditions of karma: karma is the direct cause, and afflictions are the conditions.
